Suspension bushings are essential parts of a vehicle’s suspension system. A suspension bushing is an elastic component fitted between various suspension parts. Its purpose is to prevent metal-to-metal contact and the resulting friction between different suspension elements.
In essence, bushings absorb vibration and noise from the suspension system, reduce harshness transferred to the vehicle body, and control the amount of movement within the suspension.
Control arm bushings are located between the control arm and the vehicle frame. They play a crucial role in maintaining proper tire alignment and directly affect tire wear, handling, and overall vehicle control. Most vehicles use one or two control arms per wheel on both the front and rear suspension, with each arm housing two bushings. Many front-wheel-drive cars typically use only a lower control arm, while most bakkies and SUVs are equipped with both upper and lower control arms.
Stabilizer bar bushings are mounted underneath the vehicle on anti-roll bars, which help prevent excessive body roll—especially during cornering. Because these bushings constantly twist and flex, they tend to wear out more quickly than other suspension components. Typically, vehicles have two stabilizer bars (front and rear), each fitted with two stabilizer bar bushings.
Leaf spring bushings are located in the “eyes” of the leaf spring and are commonly found in the rear suspension of heavy-load vehicles such as bakkies. Leaf springs support the vehicle’s weight, maintain ride height, and help keep the tires in consistent contact with the road surface. Due to the heavy loads and high forces these vehicles experience, leaf spring bushings are subjected to significant stress and should be inspected and replaced regularly.
Suspension bushings naturally deteriorate over time. Because they are mounted underneath the vehicle, they are constantly exposed to road debris, temperature changes, moisture, and continuous mechanical stress. These conditions gradually cause the bushings to harden, crack, or decay—affecting the overall performance of your suspension system.
One of the first signs of failing suspension bushings is steering instability. The steering may become less responsive, particularly at higher speeds. You might also feel vibrations through the steering wheel while driving or braking, indicating that the bushings can no longer properly absorb movement and vibration.
If you notice a sudden reduction in braking stability or efficiency, worn bushings could be to blame. A clunking noise coming from the control arm—especially after hitting a bump, during braking, or when making sharp turns—is another common symptom of deteriorated bushings.
Damaged bushings compromise ride comfort and vehicle performance. Since bushings are designed to cushion small shocks and absorb road vibrations, worn or cracked ones fail to do so effectively. This results in a rougher ride and increased vibration throughout the cabin.
Check your tire tread regularly for uneven wear. Uneven tread patterns often signal alignment issues, which can be caused by worn or deformed suspension bushings. Left unaddressed, this can shorten tire life and affect overall handling safety.
It is strongly recommended to replace control arm bushings as soon as signs of wear appear. Delaying the repair can lead to further damage to the suspension system and other related components, increasing maintenance costs over time.
